Since the SwagTron launched about a month back, it has become the hoverboard of choice for everyone. It is the first UL 2272 certified hoverboard in the world and has a unique patented Sentry Shield Battery System that is unbeaten in the world. It is only natural that the SwagTron with its array of hardware, software and feature enhancements will be noticed by the world.

There was a high decibel launch for the SwagTron with Times Square in New York getting plastered with the SwagTron, and article coming out in all major websites. The buzz has resulted in a sharp increase in market share for SwagTron, and a lot is being written about these really next generation hoverboards.

The SwagTron has many firsts to its name, from being the world’s first UL 2272 hoverboards to its battery system being the first and only one for electric scooters that has passed the original UL 10-ton battery crush test. Many websites have said that the SwagTron is the safest hoverboard ever, and that it can bring back the hoverboard craze to its original feverish pitch once again. In fact a recent post on Mashable which you can read below had a headline that said ‘Swagtron is almost good enough to revive the hoverboard craze’.

Swagtron is almost good enough to revive the hoverboard craze

Is it possible to reignite a fad, especially one as fully crushed as the hoverboard? Swagway is counting on it.

The company started shipping its redesigned and completely rebranded Swagtron late last month and I have been riding it for almost a week. It really is a rather different beast than the Swagway and legion of other so-called "hoverboards" we were fanatically riding just six months ago. However, the biggest difference is one you can’t see: this self-balancing rideable is built with Safety, yes, with a capital "S."

Why is safety so important? Because late last year, at the height of the hoverboard craze, the addictive personal transporters and their chargers began to go up in flames. Report after report came in of hoverboards catching fire. Turned out none of the hoverboards or their chargers were UL certified and, even though they were all coming from the same small set of factories in China, they were being built with alarmingly inconsistent array of safety and quality standards.

Strike that. There were no standards.

Like every other hoverboard manufacturer, Swagway was swept up in the controversy and, lacking UL certification, banned like everyone else.

Swagway always contended that it wasn't its riders that were melting down. There was never conclusive evidence one way or the other.

Regardless, Swagway had to start over to reenter the U.S. market.

The edgier-looking Swagtron T3 is that new beginning. The company also has a new Swagtron T1, which shares many of the T3’s features, but not the edgy, new body style or advanced riding mode, but more on that later.

From the wheels to the body, to the technology inside, this is a very different Swagwa...er...Swagtron.

Swagway took a sort of brute force approach to ensuring that no other hoverboard could claim to be a Swagtron. The new device is covered with Swagtron branding, from the chrome rims to the thick, polycarbonate body and base, which has holographic Swagway stickers and that all-important holographic UL certification sticker.

That sticker means the hoverboard is built to meet UL's standards. Part of that is something Swagway call SentryShield, which is paired with Swagway's new Battery Management System (BMS). The former is actually a fireproof, aluminum cage for the battery pack, so no matter what happens to the battery, it can't cause the whole hoverboard to spontaneously burst into flames. The BMS is designed to make sure the lithium ion rechargeable never gets to the point.

Hover in again

Broadly, the Swagtron still works the same as previous hoverboards. It's still a self-balancing board, so when you turn the Swagtron on and step gingerly onto the two rubberized pads, it will balance you automatically. Leaning slightly forward makes the Swagtron go forward and leaning back makes it go back. The footpads are also larger on the T3, a design change that also adds to ride stability and comfort.

Instead of a clean split down the middle, Swagtron is split into three parts. Both pads and wheels can move independently of each other, but they are connected to a fixed, roughly inch-and-a-half wide center that never moves. This new construction may help with increased stability – which Swagway claims – and perhaps make the Swagtron a little stronger than previous Swagways. Some people were riding the old Swagways so enthusiastically that they would jump up on down on them. Occasionally, this resulted in the hoverboards breaking right down the middle.

The Swagtron is a bit narrower than the Swagway and the platform is a tiny bit higher. The most noticeable difference, though, is in the weight. The old Swagway weighs roughly 22 pounds, while the new Swagtron weighs almost 24 pounds. (Swagway’s paperwork insists they’re the same weight and size, but that’s simply not the case.) Fortunately, the Swagtron comes with a carrying strap on the base. Too bad that the Swagtron is too heavy to carry comfortably that way for any length of time.

Ride time

Swagway sent us the more aggressive, $499 T3 model, which, with the included app, can go up to 12 mph. The $399 T1 is set to max out at 8 miles per hour. With a full charge, the Swagtron will go up to 12 miles, though that range is also dependent on riding conditions. More hills (up to a 30-degree incline) could cut the range considerably. Swagway also added battery level indicators to the top of the Swagtron so you can look down at any time and see how much battery life is left. Rider weight limit is 220 pounds. Young riders need to weigh at least 44 pounds before stepping on.

The app (iOS and Android), by the way is nicely designed and easy to navigate. Most time will be spent in the speedometer interface. Once you connect the Swagtron to your smartphone via Bluetooth, you can then see, in real time, your riding speed and the Swagtron's battery life. There’s also a virtual power button, but that only puts the Swagtron to sleep – you still have to use the physical button on the device to turn it fully off. There’s also a blue dot next to the speedometer that offers a clear readout of current speed, battery life, number of miles traveled, trip distance and battery temperature (most of the time mine was at 75-degrees F).

Other app features include naming your Swagtron and choosing your riding mode: learning, standard and advanced.

Learning keeps speed at 4 miles per hour max and slows down turning and acceleration. Standard lets you go up to 6 miles per hour and get quicker response on turns and speed. I rode most of the time in advanced (8 mph or more). When I chose that selection, I saw a pretty dire warning: “Extremely high injury risk. Not recommended for average users.” The T1 does not offer the advanced riding mode.

Whatever mode you choose, the ride itself feels pretty smooth. Swagtron operates quietly, but it does feel different than riding the Swagway. The new motors have a more controlled and rougher feel. It’s not unpleasant, just different. The larger pads underneath your feet feel different, too. More comfortable and more responsive.

A new trick

Now that the Swagtron is connected to your phone, you can add another wrinkle to the hoverboard-riding experience: music.

The Swagtron automatically taps into your music library, and whatever you play while riding will pump out of the downward-facing Bluetooth speakers in the base. They’re loud and provide pretty decent sound. And it’s fun to ride around with your own soundtrack.

Swagway has done an excellent job reinventing the hoverboard. It looks sharp, rides smooth and is quiet and fun to use. I am, though, a bit spoiled by the Ninebot Swagway miniPRO, which I recently tested. It’s larger, steadier and actually seems designed for the morning commute. Yes, it’s more expensive – $999 – but I found that I like having the column in the middle, and steering with my knees is just as intuitive as steering with my feet.

But let’s put aside my personal preferences for a minute. Can the Swagtron revive the hoverboard craze? The latest Swagway self-balancing board is still affordable and now it’s built better, Safer and with a bit of musical whimsy. The problem is, people have moved on. No one is making music videos staring hoverboards anymore. Local governments have banned them from streets and businesses have kicked the out of their offices.

As good as the Swagtron is, I’m not sure anyone cares anymore. Do you?

Hoverboards are coming back

Swagway, one of the most recognizable names in the combustible hoverboard market, is back.

The company told Mashable that its new rolling balance board, the SWAGTRON (they use all-caps for the trademark, but we'll lowercase from here on out) is coming to America.

Getting these devices back on the market in the U.S. would be quite a feat. They were deemed unsafe by U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in February and then pulled from the market by virtually every retailer (tourist traps in lower Manhattan excepted).

At the time, the CPSC said "self-balancing scooters that do not meet the safety standards referenced above to be defective, and that they may present a substantial product hazard."

One of the chief concerns was that the batteries and chargers did not meet Underwriter Laboratory standards. In fact, there didn't seem to be any standards for these boards that exploded onto the market in late 2015.

Swagway always contended that its boards met all the guidelines, such as they were. The company did appear to have UL certification for its chargers, but the new regulations required similar certification for the hoverboards themselves.

When I met with Swaway's elusive CEO Johnny Zhu in January, he showed me the new Swagtron, which had a host of new features designed to improve safety.

Now that product is coming to market in two models: the $399 T1 and the $499 T3. Both have, according to Swagway, UL2272 certification. Mashable has contacted the UL for confirmation.

We do know that the UL has certified at least one hoverboard. On May 10 it gave a UL2272 certification to Segway's Ninebot. The Xiaomi subsidiary showed off its own self-balancing robot at CES 2016. To make things a little more confusing, the original Segway (a company launched by inventor Dean Kamen more than a dozen years ago) sued a bunch of hoverboard manufacturers (including Ninebot) over patent infringement. Swagway was not named in the suit.

A spokesperson for the UL confirmed to Mashable that they have certified some manufacturers and they provided us with a link and code to check for Swagway. The company were not listed, but could also be using a broader Chinese manufacturer name (I've asked Swagway to look into this.)

Whats new

If the new Swagtron does have UL certification, then it should be cleared to ship into the U.S. If and when that happens, we'll see a redesigned and somewhat different self-balancing scooter.

Swagway switched out the motors and gear stabilization system, which they claim gives it better downhill traction and overall speed control.

The Swagtron will also have new battery indicator lights, and, according to Swagway, an "incombustible shell" and two different ride modes: Learning and Standard.

The biggest change, though, will be the claimed "battery shield," an air-tight aluminum chamber for the battery. When Zhu described the chamber to me in January, he said, "Lithium-ion battery is considered a dangerous product. It holds a lot of air. The aluminum chamber can contain any issue,”

That will be paired with a new Smart Battery Management System to protect against over-charging and short circuits.

The new T3 will be more of a pro-model, allowing the rider to turn off the Swagtron's built in speed restrictions.

Whatever model you buy, you'll want to wear a helmet.

Swagway plans to start selling the Swagtron on its website on May 31 and promises it will eventually come to Modell's Sporting Goods and other retailers.

All this depends on whether or not Swagway has satisfied the CPSC's demands. We probably won't know that until the first units ship from China and if they actually make it from the piers into American consumers' homes.

Riding Swagway's New Swagtron 'Hoverboard' Scooter

CES 2016 Bug ArtOne of the more reputable brands to emerge out of the Great Hoverboard Swamp of 2015, Swagway made the X1, our favorite two-wheeled scooter of the year: inexpensive, but easy to control and unlikely to explode. But company president John Zhu knows that he needs to do more if Swagway's going to survive into 2016, a tough environment which has already seen a patent lawsuit from rival Razor and all scooters banned on major U.S. airlines.

Thus, the Swagtron, Swagway's new $499 scooter. It looks like a hoverboard, but it's been subtly redesigned to be safer, more durable, and easier to use.

How It Rides

The redesign starts with the outer cover, which is a more durable plastic than on the original X1. My X1 tended to scratch up a lot when I was first learning it, and the new model looks less easily marked.

The Swagtron will come in two models: one with quad Bluetooth speakers under the body, and one without. Both models have a handy carrying strap, which the original Swagway X1 and competitors did not. The Bluetooth model will work with an Android or iOS app that includes an odometer and speedometer, as well as controls to switch between the Swagway's easy-handling "learning" and jumpier "sport" modes. That really demystifies use.

I took a ride on two of the units. They're still prototypes, and the steering on one was quite stiff. In learning mode, they're easy to step on to—they don't jump away from you. They rode like Swagway X1s, so, pretty comfortably. They max out at about 8mph and have the same battery capacity as last year's units, Zhu said—that's about 7.5 miles with slight hills, or 12 miles on a flat surface. It no loger beeps repeatedly when you go fast.

I asked Zhu directly about the two biggest problems his company faces: lawsuits, and the whole industry's tendency for products to go up in flames.

Razor and Ninebot now claim to have patents that apply to almost all hoverboards. Segway is suing Swagway and Razor, and Razor is suing the other two as well. Lauren Song, a spokeswoman for Swagway, said "legal counsel strongly feels [Razor's] patent is going to be invalid once they come down to it."

Swagway, meanwhile, is fighting its own battle against counterfeit models that use its name. Song has said that supposedly Swagway-branded hoverboards that have gone up in flames, such as one in New York City, were probably counterfeits. While Swagway and the counterfeits look alike, changing the design will help Swagway differentiate itself, Zhu said.

The company has also "introduced a lot of safety features to make sure that safety is the primary concern," Zhu said. While Swagway has always used Samsung batteries and insulated wiring, the new Swagtron is made of a more rugged, fire-resistant plastic, and it will have a "sentry shield," a physical component that protects the battery.

"It's a specially designed chamber to contain the beast of lithium [batteries]," Zhu joked.

Swagway is also working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to create a set of best practices and testing standards for the industry, he said.

The Swagtron will launch in February at $499. We'll have a review.

I hadn't ridden a hoverboard — the increasingly popular self-balancing rideable that definitely doesn't hover — before today. I was pretty sure I wouldn't be able to; I can't skate for the life of me, and have a habit of falling off moving things at CES. But after spending some time with the upcoming new model from Swagway, one of the biggest hoverboard makers, I have a much better idea of why they exploded in popularity over the past year.

Even if they really don't hover.

Hoverboards have, of course, gotten a lot of negative press for exploding in ways other than their popularity. And the Swagtron, Swagway's new version, is designed to sidestep that criticism by prioritizing safety. The Swagtron's plastic chassis is fire retardant, as are the rubber footpads, and the lithium ion battery is encased inside an aluminum chamber to "contain the beast," as Swagway CEO Johnny Zhu evocatively put it to me. Razor, another prominent hoverboard maker, is also showing off a new model at CES that is said to not explode.

Beyond safety features, the Swagtron adds a carrying handle to the underside along with Bluetooth speakers, just in case you don't feel conspicuous enough riding a hoverboard on the sidewalk. And while this is probably not a great idea to do this while you're riding the Swagtron, there's a new mobile app that lets you adjust speed settings, check how fast you're going, and see your remaining battery life — which, by the way, should take you between 15 to 20 miles depending on inclines and the weight of the rider. The hoverboard weighs 22.5 pounds and goes up to 10 miles per hour.

THE SWAGTRON IS ONE OF THE MOST INTUITIVE TECH PRODUCTS I'VE USED IN A LONG TIME

This being my first hoverboard experience, I can't speak to how much better the Swagtron may or may not be to what's already out there on the market. I can say that I found it surprisingly easy to ride; the helpful Swagway PR rep told me to forget about balancing myself and just trust the board itself, and that turned out to be great advice. Once I was standing, I didn't need to be told anything else — going forward, backwards, turning, and stopping all just works with minor shifts in body position. In fact, it occurred to me that the Swagtron is one of the most intuitive tech products I've used in a long time. If my six-foot-four frame and its high center of gravity can ride it without breaking a bone, I think most people would have to try pretty hard to hurt themselves on one.

I did get to compare the Swagtron to the original Swagway X1, which the company pointed out to me is tuned to be a little bit faster than the prototype of the new model at this stage, and also offers a slightly smoother ride. Beyond these differences, which Swagway says will be ironed out by the Swagtron's release, the riding experience is pretty much identical.

THE SWAGTRON SHOULD BOLSTER SWAGWAY'S REPUTATION FOR LEGITIMACY

That's to say that the Swagtron doesn't really change the hoverboard game — it just adds a few neat features. But Swagway's effort to focus on quality is likely to pay off in the short term at least, seeing as it's one of the only companies you can easily buy a hoverboard from through vendors like Amazon, which pulled cheaper knockoffs from its store last month. The Swagtron should bolster the company's reputation for legitimacy when it goes on sale later this year.

But really, my biggest takeaway from my encounter with the Swagtron today was that it, and presumably other models too, are a total blast to ride. I wasn't expecting to have as much fun as I did zipping around an impromptu track and weaving in and out of tables, but it only takes personal experience with the product category to understand why it's taken off so dramatically — despite the silly name, hoverboards are a genuinely novel and accessible creation. CES remains full of surprises.

SwagTron, sounds a bit like a Transformers autobot doesn’t it? However, it deserves that name, because it is a definite evolution from the previous models of hoverboards. New Swagway SwagTron Features

Fire-retardant Plastic Chassis – This will play an important role in containing any kind of fire, as the main body of the SwagTron will be fire-retardant. The material is poly-carbonate (fire-resistant) hard plastic, and the entire shell is made from it.

Fire-retardant Footpads – The footpads control the motors of the hoverboard and are the part which stays in contact with the rider. Making the rubber footboards fire-retardant means the chances of fire injury are much reduced for the person riding the hoverboard.

Sentry Shield™ technology wrapping the battery – The battery of the SwagTron will be encased in an aluminum chamber, that has been built using the Sentry Shield technology.
