There are a lot of different brands around, but your aim should be to buy a longboard that will let you do what are setting out to do.

A pintail longboard will let you cruise and carve. In fact they are great for free styles, and ideal for skateboarding under around 25 miles an hour.

A drop through longboard is ideal for faster speeds and also for downhill skateboarding and carving.

If you want to go to office or school, pick a pintail, they are easier to maneuvre between pedestrians and quickly pick up and get inside a building.

It all comes down to how much you want to skateboard. If the passion inside you is deep, then you will find a way and you will get the one that you like.
