Very often we are asked as to what is the best drone. However, a huge factor in answering that question is the budget range in which the drone falls. There are best drones in different budget ranges, and that is a far better way to find a drone that will fit your needs.
My personal choice of drone - the Mavic 2 Zoom
If I were to be asked what the best drone is across all budgets, taking into consideration the capabilities of the drone and the price. I would say all things considered the best drone would be the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom. I have had the best experiences flying the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom, as it has everything that I need. I look for great imagery and video footage and, great control and of course rage and flight time. The usual but for me capturing the right quality content is important, so the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom scores on all fronts and also does not overshoot my image and video requirements. For example the DJI Inspire 2 is much better in terms of video and photograph quality, however it is way above my own requirement. The DJI Inspire 2 is probably more for professional film makers, even Hollywood directors.
So for me it is the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom. It is under $400 and delivers professional quality photographs and video footage. That’s just what I need.
Your best drone may a something totally different, so let us have a look at the best drones across a cross-section of budget ranges. Just to put across another perspective, your main reason to fly a drone may be to have a great time flying it. In that scenario I would only recommend an inexpensive drone, and not the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom.
Another point I want to make is that though this is yet another list of the best drones that you have come across, there is one very big difference. I have either flown these drones myself or my team has flown them and had extensive first-hand experience with them. That means each drone is a carefully assessed choice. We have chosen from drones that we have flown, crashed, used, tested and eventually liked above the rest of the competition in that budget range.
As is natural, there will be some amount of personal bias in the list as we all have our specific likes and dislikes. For instance I have a certain proclivity towards better quality photography, so if two drones are equal in all other parameters, but one delivers better quality images, I will pick that one.
Low cost beginner drone – the best drone under $25
For me the best drone under $25 is the Eachine E010.
It is a very simple and no frills drone. It doesn’t even have a camera. Imagine me liking a drone without a camera. Well that says a lot about how good this tiny champion is. The Eachine E010 is a great drone to get your hands wet in drone flying. Eachine by the way is the undisputed leader in the low budget drones category, and it many models are the most popular in the beginner and basic drones segment.
This tiny drone that is smaller than the palm of your hand, costs around $23 and is a wonderful drone to learn the intricacies of flying a drone. It looks small and simple but don’t be fooled, it is not very easy to master. The left stick is for throttle and gives the Eachine E010 the power to lift off, fly higher and lower as per the amount you push the stick. In most controllers the left stick center when you release it, but not in the Eachine E010. That means you have to apply precise pressure on the left stick to keep the tiny drone at the heights you want it to stay on. That needs some practice. However, when you are able to control this little dude well, you will find all the other more expensive drones easy to control. However, you need to try not to opt for the headless mode when you fly. It removes the need to keep the drone aligned with the controller in direction. That means no matter where the head of the drone is pointed, the controls will make it move in the exact direction that you move it. This is the easy way out. Try and use the regular mode with this little drone.
I must tell you here that tiny drones are extremely difficult to control, but this one is different. Since the small toy drones within ridiculously small budgets do not use much of technology other tan the basics, the remote and the control it delivers is also quite rudimentary. You end up almost not being able to fly it, but just crashing it from one place to the other. And with such less time to fly per charge, it will take a very long time to be able to do something that resembles controlling and flying it. However, with the Eachine E010, the drone is surprisingly stable and responds pretty well to the controls. So, that is another big win for this tiny toy drone.
The higher priced drones don’t have headless mode as they have technology like GPS, visual positioning systems and of course a camera which will not be useful in a headless mode.

Entry level budget drone – the best drone under $100
For me the best drone under $100 is the DJI Ryze Tello.
Now, let me make it clear right away, before you get too excited, that this is not a drone by DJI. The company is Ryze Robotics, and the drone has been developed in collaboration with DJI. It also has a Pentium processor inside it. The Tello is an incredible drone for its price. I have flown this drone for many hours. The best part about the Tello, is that it is low cost, yet it gives the entire experience of a full fledged high end drone. The image quality is good but the video quality is nothing writ whom about. However the stability of the drone, the controls, the flight modes and the abilities of the Tello are fabulous for a price of under $100. It has a flight time of around 12 to 13 minutes, which is more than enough for you to have a great flying experience. If you have extra batteries you can stretch your flying time to 30 minutes. It is super stable indoors and also outdoors if there is less windy conditions. In windy conditions it starts to veer and swing in place. This little drone that weighs just 90 grams, is packed with fun and more fun. It has a range of around 60 meters and it will go up to a height of 15 meters. This ensures that this small drone does not get away due to high winds or loss of wireless signals. The amazing thing about this drone is its steadiness in the air. It has a visual positioning system thanks to two small cameras under it, that senses what is under it and keeps it stable. It has many features including thrown and fly, hand landing, up and away for a dramatic selfie video and more. This drone is super easy to fly and control and is a must buy if you want a feel of what flying a drone and taking aerial imagery is all about. You won’t get great quality video as the video is recorded straight into the smart phone which is connected to the drone, but it will be decent enough for social sharing. It has some pretty interesting built-in flight modes like flying all around a point of interest with the camera facing the center, and more.
It has a 5 MP camera and digital video stabilization, so your video will come out looking alright. The photos are pretty good and if the light is decent you can get some pretty good shots. There are great package deals on Amazon on the DJI Tello.
Mid level drone – the best drone under $200
For me the best drone under $200 is the Altair AA108
The Altair AA108 is a drone built by a band that is based in the US, and has some serious drone enthusiasts at the helm. This drone is really fabulous for the price, especially if you want to get some good aerial imagery from the drone. It is very stable and will allow you to take the perfect shot from the air, and also records good quality video within a 60 meter distance. That is enough distance if you want some decent shots around you.
Before we get into the Altair AA108, I want to mention that when you think of the best drones under $200, another name that comes to mind immediately is the Yuneec Breeze. The great part about the Breeze is that it was launched as a high end drone costing $500, and features 4K camera. However, the price of the Yuneec Breeze has really come down and now it is under $200. That means you get a near professional drone for video and photography, at under $200. The high resolution camera of the Yuneec Breeze can be tilted so that is a huge win at its price. This drone is an overall steal, however whether it is still be available to buy or not is the question. You can check it out on Amazon here. If you are lucky it may still be available to buy at this really low price.
Getting back to the Altair AA 108, this robust and reliable drone is wonderful to control and delivers great HD image quality. It packs a 120 degree wide-angle 720P camera that captures high quality images and videos. Before getting into specs etc. Let me tell you that since this is a US based brand, the customer service is very good. You can easily connect with their customer service and get help quickly for any problems or issues. The drone has a range of 100 meters and its FPV range is the same as the control range, so you will have video on your smart phone right up to the point where the drone reaches the end of its range. The cost of the Altair AA 108 right now is around $129, so at its price it is a really good drone. Surprisingly this drone has a headless mode, which makes it even easier to fly for beginners. However a headless mode means that you will not have control over what you are capturing with the camera, as the drone will not move keeping its front portion with the camera in the front, but in any direction at all. The Altair AA 108 also has one button take off and altitude hold for extra stability in the air. When we tested the Altair, we found it to be exceptionally stable, which is a great plus point, especially if you want to take the prefect photo.

Semi professional level drone – the best drone under $300
For me the best drone under $300 is the Parrot Bebop 2
Maybe I was lucky or it is still priced at $299 for the Bebop 2, the Skycontroller and the Cockpitglasses in a combo deal. The Parrot Bebop 2 alone was over $399, and getting the entire package for under $300 is a super steal deal. Last I checked the deal was still on!
Anyways the Parrot Bebop 2 is simply put, an incredible drone in its category. There is nothing even close to it in the high quality video and photo quality with long flight time and massive controller range segment that it is in. It has a controller range of up to1.24 miles or 2 kilometers. That is a lot. Its flight time is up to 25 minutes. That is more than enough. Its camera resolution is 14 mega pixels. That is fabulous. It captures video footage in full HD 10180 dpi. That is fantastic.
The Skycontroller is a wonderful controller and will connect with your smart phone or tablet to transmit video directly from the Parrot Bebop 2 drone. The Bebop 2 has digital stabilization of video, so your footage will come out looking quite good, even in low light. Though the Bebop 2 does not have a gimbal, the camera can be made to angle downwards to look almost directly below the drone. It also has excellent flight features like “Return to home”, Flight Plan” and “Follow Me”. The Parrot Cockpitglasses included in the FPV bundle has a 90 degree field of vision to make the FPV experience totally immersive.
The Bebop 2 drone is a beautifully designed drone, it looks like a powerful beast waiting to spring into the air, like a striped feline. It weighs just 500 grams so it is very easy to carry. Though I have done long flights in the city, I was not able to achieve massive range due to being in a bust city. However drone enthusiasts who have taken the Bebop 2 to large parks, have recorded distances of up to 2000 meters. My maximum distance was around 1100 meters, because there was a lot of wireless disturbance in the area. The Bebop 2 has a fail-safe system where it starts to return to home if the drone loses connection with the Skycontroller for more than 30 seconds. Overall this is one of my favorite drones. It is reliable and does what it promises, the video and photographs is very high quality. I love this drone, and you will love it too.

My personal experience with the Parrot Bebop 2 drone
I have had the Parrot Bebop 2 for just a week or so, and I am absolutely in love with it. Considering that my last drone was a Tello Ryze, this is a massive upgrade for me.
Well for starters this drone is incredible in terms of video and image quality, has fabulous range, flies amazingly. That actually covers all the main bits, but there is so much more.
The Bebop 2 holds its own even in windy conditions. The first day I flew it, the trees were swaying quite a bit with the wind, but the Bebop 2 held steady. When I watched the video for the first time, I was blown away by the clarity and smoothness of the entire footage.
The set up was fast and simple, but I was very careful about each part as I had already read about pitfalls and possible issues.
The first major problem to avoid is loosely fixed propellers. The Parrot Bebop 2 has specific propellers for specific motors. That means you need to fix the correctly color coded propeller to the correct color jacket on each motor. When you take the drone out of the box, each motor has a small silicone cap on them, which are yellow and blue. Two motors diagonally are yellow, and the other two diagonally are blue. You have to carefully attach the yellow labelled propellers to the yellow jacketed motors and the blue labelled propellers to the blue jacketed motors.
A great tip for future reference for your propellers, is that you can fix the yellow and blue stickers that were on the propellers initially to the corresponding motors in the diagram in the quick start guide. I did that and now I will not be confused about which motors were supposed to get the yellow labelled propellers and which were supposed to get the blue ones.
Fixing the propellers at the right place is the first step, but more important is fixing them securely.
Fixing your parrot Bebop 2’s propellers securely involves a small propeller fixing tool that you will get in the box. Essentially when you set the propeller on the motor, it goes into the grooves but it needs be screwed tight like a light bulb set in place.
That means the propeller grooves have to be rotated by applying rotational pressure with the tool till they are in place and have slid into the circular part of the groove from the smooth curve.
Only when the propellers are all the way screwed securely should you start the drone. If you are not careful the propellers will fly outwards at high speed. Although the propellers are made of a unique almost paper like nylon material that will not cause injury, there is still a small chance that they hit us at a bad place.
The second and potentially drone breaking consequence can be that a propeller comes loose in flight and your precious Parrot Bebop 2 plunges to the ground.
So my suggestion is that before every flight have good look at where the propeller grooves are and make sure they are not loose.
Now if you are coming in without any prior knowledge about slightly higher end drones and do not have a detailed user manual or tutorial to guide you through the process, things can get a bit intimidating in the beginning. You need to charge the battery and the controller. The controller has a screwed in lid where the battery goes in, which makes you wonder if you need to open it and put in batteries. You do not need to do this. You just need to charge the controller.
Now to figure out exactly which cable and charger is for what is also not completely straightforward. There is one charger with two cables that can attach to it. When you attach the first cable it will further connect to the drone battery and charge it. When you attach the other cable it will further connect to the Skycontroller 2 and charge it.
The next part is to figure out when the battery or the controller is fully charged. That part is really easy, the charger has a small light on it which is red when it is charging the battery and when the battery gets fully charged then the light turns green. With controller the light is on the controller. The charger light does not come on but the controller light is red when charging and when fully charged it turns green. Seems very simple, but you still need to know it.
Simultaneously you need to download the Freeflight Pro app on your mobile device. The problem is that all the literature and information on the website points to Freeflight 3 but that is outdated, now the mobile app is Freeflight Pro.
When I searched for Freeflight Pro on google Play Store, nothing came up, instead I had Freeflight 3 showing as an option. When I clicked on it, thankfully Freeflight Pro came up. I downloaded it and activated it.
Getting the Freeflight Pro app working is as easy as clicking a few buttons. The very first time it will ask a couple of extra questions and you will need to choose a few options like which Skycontroller you have, which Cockpitglasses you have etc.
Before I go any further, let me tell you that I am not using the mobile device to control the Parrot Bebop 2, I want greater control so I have purchased the Skycontroller 2 with it, in the Parrot Bebop 2 FPV pack. I find it much easier to control the drone and frankly I hate the lag that sometimes creeps in due to using virtual joysticks.
A quick tip that I want to share with you before I forget is that when you use the Skycontroller, make sure the wi-fi network in your mobile device is off. It won’t do to just tap the wi-fi icon, but you need to go into settings and then switch off all wi-fi. This is important because if your mobile device’s wi-fi is on, then the Skycontroller’s far more powerful and longer range wi-fi is not used and you end up underutilizing the full range of the Parrot Bebop 2.

High end semi-pro video and photo quality drone - Best Drone Under $400
For me the best drone under $400 is the DJI Spark
The DJI Spark breaks into the high end drones category because of its video and photograph quality. DJI is a world wide leader in drones and as per some reports accounts for nearly 70% of drone sales across all segments. They are known for the Phantom drones but now the Mavic and Spark drones are gaining in popularity too. The Spark is a very light drone, and has an incredible amount of features and capabilities packed into its small size.
If you are into drone photography and drone aerial videography, then this is the first drone that is capable of giving you professional high end results. The DJI Spark has a two-axis gimbal and a 12 MP camera. Coming from DJI, it is no surprise that the Spark is excellent in flight. It is very stable and has a huge 2000 meter range. It has a flight time of 16 minutes, and its compact size makes it very easy to carry around. The Spark also features some wonderful features like hand gestures which do not require a controller or smartphone, great flight modes and much more. And it has obstacle avoidance technology, which is not available in any of the drones that I have recommended up till this point. In fact many users have said that the DJI Spark is excellent at close range obstacle avoidance and even better than the DJI Mavic, which is their higher end drone. The Spark for me is clearly the best drone under $500 that is ideal for aerial photography.
Keep in mind that rumours are flying hard and fast that the Spark 2 is going to be launched soon, and that it is going to be a great drone which will weigh under 250 grams. This will put the Spark 2 below the weight that requires registration in many countries, especially Russia.

High end pro level video and photo quality drone - Best Drone Under $700
For me the best drone under $700 is the Parrot Anafi
This is the second Parrot drone in the list, the first one being the Bebop 2. The Anafi is the latest offering from Parrot, and is a very good drone in the $500 to 700 price range. In fact it has almost no competition in that price range currently. The Anafi is the latest from Parrot and has their very best technology and features in it. The Parrot Anafi is several notches above the DJI Spark as it has some features that aren’t available in top end drones too. The Parrot Anafi has a 180 degree gimbal, that allows you movement from -90 degrees to +90 degrees. That means you can take shots that most other drones cannot. Also at just 320 grams it is only slightly heavier than the DJI Spark, yet pack a lot more. The Anafi deliver 4K HDR video and 21 MP photos. That is seriously high resolution and high quality. Also to be able to move in closer top the action yet stay at a safe distance the Anafi has 2.8 X lossless zoom. That means you can zoom in without any loss in image resolution.
The Parrot Anafi is the first under $1000 drone that offers this lossless zoom. It has a impressive flight time of 25 minutes and a massive 4,000 meter flight range. Being light and folding into a very small footprint, it is also extremely easy to carry around. The Anafi unfolds in 3 seconds once you take it out of the box. You can really do a lot with the Anafi, and its features are truly awesome, including the body which is made from carbon fibers charged with empty glass microbeads that are filled with air and resist bumps and knocks.

High end pro level video and photo quality drone - Best Drone Under $800
For me the best drone under $800 is the DJI Mavic Air
When you take your budget up to $800 you get a really awesome drone with a compact size and small footprint but incredible capabilities. The DJI Mavic Air is absolutely brilliant video and photo quality and an impressive range of features and specifications. It has both front and back obstacle avoidance which means that you will not crash into anything even when you are sending it backwards by mistake. The camera of the Mavic Air is attached to a three axis gimbal and delivers 4K video. You can get impressive professional quality footage with this compact drone. Many film makers prefer this drone as it is very easy to take along when travelling. Its small size makes it a great portable drone with impressive video and photo abilities. A range of 4,000 meters means you can take it absolutely anywhere you want to, and the 20 minutes flight times gives you time enough to capture the footage you want to. It also features the DJI array of flight modes and features, which means you will get the very best video and photos. This is a drone for amateurs and professionals alike and a real joy to own and fly.

High end cinematography level video and photo quality drone - Best Drone Under $1000
For me the best drone under $1000 is the Yuneec Typhoon H
The Yuneec Typhoon offers something that filimg crews love. It allows two people to control the flying and the camera. That means a drone pilot can fly the drone expertly anywhere, while the film maker can control he camera and gimbal separately to get the perfect shot. This places it a notch above any other drone in the under $1000 range. The Yuneec Typhoon H is a really good filming drone, and its camera is of the very highest quality. With a 360 degree gimbal that lets you film in any direction, the Yuneec has made its landing gear retractable, so that it does not come in the way of the camera. The Yuneec Typhoon H has a flight time of 25 minutes and obstacle avoidance technology. It also boasts a top speed of 43.5 miles per hour, which is very fast indeed. Unlike other drones in this category the Typhoon H has a built-in 7 inch screen in the controller.
If you are serious about filming, this is the drone to go for, as it is the lowest priced drone in the market that allows two-man teams to film, one controlling the flight, one the camera and gimbal.

Ultra High end compact pro level video and photo quality drone - Best Drone Under $1300
For me the best drone under $1300 is the DJI Mavic 2
The Mavic 2 is truly a masterpiece according to me. It has been infused with all the best DJI technology and yet has a compact and ultra portable form. As a non-professional drone enthusiast, I am happiest flying the Mavic 2 Zoom, but you may want the Pro. It all depends on what you want to do with fabulous drone by DJI. The Mavic 2 Pro has slightly higher video and photo specifications, and is more suited for a professional photographer or filmmaker, while the Zoom is more consumer friendly. It features an optical zoom feature that keeps the image sharp at all zoom levels. The Mavic 2 also has incredible obstacle avoidance capabilities, with sensors ion the front, back, sides, top and bottom. The omnidirectional sensors means you will find it very hard to crash it from any direction.
The Mavic 2 has an incredible 8000 meters range and a flight time of 31 minutes. That is enough for all of your needs, including capturing professional video and photographs.
While the Mavic 2 Zoom is under $1300, the Mavic 2 Pro is around $1500. I have flown both of these drones, and own the Mavic 2 Zoom. I can say that as a consumer drone, there is no comparison of the Mavic 2 Zoom in terms of features, capabilities, quality and size. You can take the Zoom with you anywhere and be assured that you will get the very best aerial images and video in any place and situation. The Mavic 2 Zoom camera offers 2X Optical Zoom with 12 MP photos and 4K video. The Mavic 2 Pro has a Hasselblad 20 MP camera, 4K video and superior color and quality of image.

Ultra High end Film Director level video and photo quality drone - Best Drone Under $1500
For me the best drone under $1500 is the DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0
Still within range is the DJI Phantom 4 Pro, when it comes to getting the best camera that there is out there in the drone universe. Alright, not the very best as that would be reserved for the super expensive professional drones like the DJI Inspire series, but close to the very best. It is just a few hundred dollars more than the Mavic 2, the Phantom 4 Pro delivers sharpness in imagery and video that none of the drones in the list up till now can match. The Phantom 4 Pro is well established in the drone universe as a top class video and photo capturing drone and is used by professionals across the world for their work.
If you are a professional photographer or filmmaker, this is a good choice for almost any of your needs. If you want to reduce the cost while retaining the camera, then there is the Phantom Advanced. The Advanced does not have all the bells and whistles and also doesn’t have the side and rear obstacle avoidance technology in it. Otherwise the phot and video quality is the same.

Hollywood blockbuster quality aerial video and photo level drone - Best Drone Under $3000
For me the best drone under $3000 is the DJI Inspire 2
This is simply put the ultimate drone when it comes to aerial filming and photography. The Inspire 2 is a monster drone in terms of its camera, video, flight and overall ability. This is the best that you can get, and it is more than a match for making Hollywood blockbusters. The DJI Inspire 2 is an inspiring drone in every way. With such humongous features and capabilities offered in this amazing drone, you will not get it cheap. The Inspire 2 comes in for around $2000 without the camera. The entire set with camera is around $3000, and with the Zenmuse camera it goes over $6000.
The line for the Inspire 2 is ‘Power Beyond Imagination’ and it really lets your imagination run wild with the possibilities. It is customisable to your needs, and has monster features that no other drone can match today, at its price range.
